This service could be valuable to you even if you think it might be a few years before you will be purchasing a home. Preparation can take some time and it is never too soon to start looking at options. The Home Ownership Counsellor will help you to identify your options and guide you to make the best housing choice for you and your family.

If you would like to make an appointment with the Home Ownership Counsellor, please contact us. At your appointment, your housing needs will be assessed, and the Counsellor will then help you to understand if you are prepared for the financial and time commitment of home ownership. Information will be provided about various home ownership programs in Winnipeg and you will be guided through the qualification and application process.

New Journey Housing's Home Ownership Training includes the following:

1. Positives and negatives of home ownership
2. Understanding the financial aspects - including mortgages, down payments, and the costs of purchasing and maintaining your home
3. How to begin looking for a home to buy
4. Home Ownership Programs for lower income earners
5. I own a home - Now what do I do? Training possibilities
6. Utility Bills - Are there ways to save money?
7. Caring for a house in Winnipeg's cold winters.

The Home Ownership Program also offers optional follow-up visits at your home after you move in. The Counsellor can walk through your house, giving an opportunity to ask questions about operating and maintaining your home, as well as conducting a safety inspection (including smoke detectors and locks).  Information can be provided to the home owner about the neighbourhood - including local community centres, libraries, schools and shopping.  The Counsellor will be available for optional ongoing follow-up visits as time permits.
